At the start of the network locking I installed wireshark on my downstairs PC but I was unable to monitor the Humax traffic because the switch at position 3) locked up.

Pollensa1946: Which remote? The Humax remote?

    Yes.
The Panasonic TV is not connected to the internet. The Humax is connected to the TV by HDMI cable.

I would take a look at the router traffic.
One possibility is that the Humax thinks the line has dropped, if so it would try and locate and then get a lease from a DHCP server. Nearly all of this traffic are broadcast messages which will be processed by every host of the network.

Hence my suggestion to see if a fixed ip changes things. (it may not the Foxsat still issues a DHCP request before using the fixed ip).

The fact that you use the Humax remote to start up both the TV and Humax box (which then locks up) suggests a CEC (in Panasonic its Viera) link. Switch it off in the TV settings menu.

The Panasonic TV's Viera link is set to Player1 which is HDMI1 and has the Samsung Blu-ray player connected. The Humax box is connected to HDMI2 and the Amazon Fire box connected to HDMI3.

See the forum post that I started on 11 November 2014 (https://myhumax.org/forum/topic/hdr-1000s-software-version-uksfaa-20201-problem) on why I had to move the Humax box from HDMI1 to HDMI2 because of it being linked to the Freesat Android app.

Starting up my Amazon Fire box also wakes up the Panasonic TV.

Powering on the Humax box with the Humax remote and it then waking up the Panasonic TV is normal behaviour and this has been how it has worked since I moved the Humax box from HDMI1 to HDMI2 back in November 2014.

I never have my Panasonic TV wake up any of my devices or vice-versa - always prone to giving you problems. As for the Freesat app - spawn of the devil, I soon got rid of that too, always trying to wake up the Humax every 20 mins or so.

Just make it totally unlinked to anything and when you get your Homeplugs use those then report back.

There have been various s/w changes to the Humax, including one in late Dec 2015 that caused problems with various TVs. You are not going to find out if CEC is an influencing factor unless you switch it off.

I have gone into Panasonic TV setup and disabled Viera Link and then powered the TV off/on.

Got the Homeplugs today and I have now connected the Humax box directly to a port on the HH5.

Installed Wireshark on my laptop and have the laptop connected to a port on the HH5 with a display filter of 192.168.0.250 (the IP address of the Humax box).

I will leave Wireshark capturing data for some time and see what turns up.

I've got everything crossed for you now. Given what you have done it should be OK as I can't see how the Humax can interfere with your network now.

The Wireshark program died during the night probably because it ran out of laptop memory. I started the program again but this time I used a capture filter "host 192.168.0.250" instead of a display filter which should greatly reduce the data captured.

When the two PCs were switched on this morning they were able to access the Internet.

This afternoon I woke up the Humax box and it worked fine with Wireshark recording several ARP protocol 'Who has' broadcasts and some SSDP protocol to 239.255.255.255 with 'NOTIFY*/1.1'. I then powered off the Humax using the power button on its remote.

As everything seemed to be working, I decided to bring the Netgear 8-port switch [position 1)] into the equation so I removed the Homeplug's cable from the HH5 port and connected it to a port in the switch.

I will leave Wireshark monitoring this new setup.

You would have been well advised to see how you got on with the Homeplugs for a few days first before going anywhere near the network switch. If it was my setup now you have the homeplugs I would use those anyway as they are very reliable and tend to be trouble free.

As a former IT person (31+ years) who looked after the network infrastructure, phones, PCs/laptops, servers etc for 300+ software engineers for 10 years before retiring, I would like to find the cause of my home network lockup problem.

This is why I am adding back one switch at a time with my laptop connected directly to a HH5 port running Wireshark software that is monitoring the network for messages from/to the Humax box.
