Just whipped the lid off a HDR 1000S and these are the Sam Young caps on main board (I think)

    1 x 220uF 16V
    1 x 220uF 10V
    3 x 100uF 50V

I have a dead 1000S at home (won't boot), and access to another (no longer recognizes HDD) as well. Will have to try replacing the caps and see if there's any change.

Might be worthwhile trying the working power supply on the dead unit.

I suspect it's suffering from failed capacitors, similar to the one mentioned here:
    https://myhumax.org/forum/topic/dtr-t10x0-successful-repair

I'll take a look in to box and see how easy it would be to swap these out. If its just a soldering iron job then I've no problems with that. This really shouldn't be happening after 2 years.

It's a shame that there aren't any other Freesat boxes available, if this fails it looks like a HDR1100s might be required. Possibly with extra warranty as no doubt there will be issue again.

The problem doesn't seem the be the internal or external power supplies (which just provide 12V), but the device on the mainboard which produces the other required voltages from the incoming 12V.

This device (TPS65251 4.5-V to 18-V Input, High-Current, Synchronous Step-Down Three Buck Switcher With Integrated FET) gets upset when the capacitors go out of specification.

It may be that later models use more surface-mount capacitors, which can be just as unreliable in my experience. Unfortunately, they are a little more tricky to replace.

I have a 1000S box open on the bench, circuit board Rev 1.0

    Capacitors are as follows:

    Through hole:
    C95: 220uF 10V
    C122: 220uF, 16V
    C1732, C1744, C1747: 100uF, 50V

    Surface mount:
    3 x 100uF 16V
    3 x 22uF 16V
    3 x 10uF 50V
    2 x 100uF 25v

Guess I'll see if I can order up some replacements and warm up the soldering iron, there's not much to lose

    It'll be OK to use 220uF @ 16V for C95 and C122.

Just registered to add my name to the list of people with this problem.
I'm quite excited about getting the soldering iron out should it prove to be a capacitor issue.

Replaced all through hole caps. Still no hard drive found. It was worth a punt but no go.

Will see what other possible remedies will be suggested in days, weeks or months ahead!
