Well I suppose it was worth the try
A bit of a Catch 22 here then... under the 'new for old exchange scheme', Scriabin received a shiny new box, but had to send his old one back with its recordings consigned to infinity...
I wonder if the 'repair' option now exists?

Sorry there's a thread somewhere on here where Humax changed from repairing units to replacement units a while ago.

... so I guess it's "Goodbye! Goodbye!" to "Allo! Allo!"...

For the second time in as many months my HDR1000S has lost all recordings and goes to formatting when I try to see recordings. The screen has also been freezing of late and have had to switch it on and off several times. What is going on?

As I have said repeatedly in this and other threads. Do not treat modern PVRs as a way of archiving material long term as if they fail your 'treasured recordings' goes with them.

Much better to get stuff onto something like a NAS in RAID 1 and back that up regularly too.

I am probably one of the most backed-up people around, as far as my PC files (documents, videos, pictures etc) go. However, Humax doesn't make life easy in this respect.

My former PVR was a Sony machine which had both HDD and DVD-RW, so I was able to archive anything I wanted to keep onto DVD. My son-in-law has an earlier Humax PVR which permits files to be exported via its USB port. However, Humax have removed this feature from the HDR1n00 boxes, presumably having been leaned on by copyright owners, and nobody (AFAIK) has found a work-round for this. For people who simply want to keep a copy for their own personal use, we have the pirates to thank.

    freesat is the chief suspect.

    "freesat is the chief suspect"

    Yes, that figures!

A pity then that Freesat doesn't put as much effort into ensuring the reliability of their "Hobson's choice" product. If, as I understand, the boxes are made in Germany, whatever happened to "Vorsprung durch Technik"?!

Barry's advised in post #513 that "A small number of units sold - less than 1% have suffered the 'HDD not recognised issue'". I have no idea how many units Humax have sold since the model was introduced, but let's guess 100,001. "Less than 1%" could therefore be up to 1,000 faulty units and that, IMHO, is rather a lot!
