I've now booted up factory reset booted up again switched to stereo setting and still no sound and intermittent picture. Is it time to give up?

That'll be a yes then I take it!?!

I've had another box as a xmas present and no sound on that either, DVD works fine on same TV. the problem itself is bad enough the lack of support is disgusting.

I didn't receive a response at all the last time. I finally got the sound working after 10 days and now the box is going in to stand by and then turning back on of its own accord every 20 seconds or so.

I meant, what was the lack of support you found disgusting, did you contact them and find them unhelpful? They seem to have been quick to acknowledge and identify this problem, and make an update available. Credit where credit's due, etc.

I mean it takes ages for a reply and the advice doesn't work. Acknowledging a problem is one thing dealing with it is another.

Have you actually contacted Humax or Freesat?

Yes I called and explained problem confirming I'd already done a factory reset. 2 days later I received an email with step by step instructions on how to do a factory reset.

If it was me, I would do the second reset and then if it still didn't help, I would ring again and report that, and seek further assistance.

Or you could contact your retailer and ask to return it. It might just be a faulty box.

The fact that both your boxes are having problems makes the "faulty-box" theory less likely. It might be something in the setup/environment - especially as it all started with the "HDCP not valid" problem (environment-related).

You could try a little experiment, if you have an obliging mate with a satellite setup. Try both your boxes in the other location, and see if the behaviour is the same.

I would put money on the no sound problem being a HDMI hand-shaking problem. I had exactly this problem when I hooked up my media player to my new TV, perfect picture no sound. Fortunately the player provides complete control over all the HDMI output parameters and I was able to tweak these until success (and yes it cost about 1/4th what the Humax cost). So hopefully the upcoming update from Freesat will fix this.
